Anderson, SC is located in upstate SC. Anderson has an established history. It was initially settled in 1826, and named after a General in the Revolutionary War called Robert Anderson. Not too far from Anderson is Pendleton Mill, an historic cotton mill that is the oldest in the state and is still in operation today. In the heart of the city, you will see remnants of the city's ties to confederate ways and bits of the revolutionary war. In fact, there is a cannon that is from 1764. Interestingly, during the Civil War, it became the hub for confederate army ammunition.

If you take a drive across the country you might get a glimpse at some of the racehorse pastures. Many racehorses are bred in the Anderson area. There are beautiful old mansions that highlight Anderson’s history of agriculture. Today, the city’s economy is driven by manufacturing, with many different factories employing area residents.

Anderson is considered part of the larger Greenville-Spartanburg area, sometimes referred to as the Upstate. Though Anderson is smaller than either of these cities, it continues to grow larger, drawing residents with its relatively inexpensive cost of living. The median rent is several $100 below the national average, with many people in Anderson, SC renting their homes instead of owning them. While the area is considered safe, the crime rates for theft are higher than the national average. If you are planning a move to the area, you may want to take measures to ensure that you are not a victim by installing cameras and/or alarms.

Anderson is known as the Electric City due to its longstanding relationship with hydroelectric power. This power source made Anderson one of the first cities in the Southeast to have electricity. Today, the Hartwell Dam continues to produce hydroelectric power. Adjacent Lake Hartwell is a popular location for boating, fishing and other water recreation activities. Anderson is also home to William States Lee Station, owned by Duke Energy, which produces natural gas energy.

Anderson is home to Anderson University, a private university associated with the Southern Baptist Convention. Anderson University was initially founded in 1848 under a different name, and after being renamed Anderson College, it spent a period of time as a women’s college before expanding to serve both men and women. Younger residents attending Anderson’s public schools are served by one of 11 elementary schools, five middle schools and two high schools. There are also several private schools in the area.

You will find Anderson in the Northwest corner of South Carolina. Though it is an inland city, the mountains and several lakes are just around the corner, making Anderson a place where you can live affordably and have access to a variety of recreational activities. Asheville and Greenville are major cities that are simply a stone's throw away. Atlanta is approximately two hours away, making it a reasonable day trip.

But you don’t have to live Anderson at all! Anderson has many small and local shops and restaurants to enjoy the southern hospitality at. When you visit you can check out the Anderson Mall, Anderson County Library, Anderson City Fire Department Museum, and Anderson County Museum, to name a few.
